She has completed a range of commissions in the past couple of years including It Is Just The Heart for the Flinders Quartet and Aspects of Dreaming for The Australian Voices and residencies with Orchestras Australia and the Sydney Youth Orchestra. Numerous ensembles and orchestras such as Kiev Philharmonic and Melbourne Symphony Orchestras have undertaken recordings of her work. Katy has won various prizes and awards including the Dorian Le Gallienne Prize and the 2008 Lyrebird Commission. Her music has been broadly described as contemporary classical, drawing influences from a range of sources including text from ancient Chinese poets to contemporary texts from unusual places. Abbott has described her music aesthetic: 'In my music, I am trying to capture the little things that make us human or happen to us because we are human. I am not writing about one specific societal or political issue, but rather, I seek to unpack the human side of life; humour, foibles, quirky things we do and say, beauty, grief and friendship'. 2008 promises to be another busy year with the release of a recording of her first Symphony, Souls of Fire by the Kiev Philharmonic Orchestra and undertaking several commissions including the British Music Society's 2008 Lyrebird Commission, a new work for Wind Band and beginning a new piece for the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for 2009.
